Translating and Interpreting in English I
Prerequisites: relevant both general and professional knowledge of English adequate to knowledge of second year students

Aims of the subject: Students get acquainted with the essentials of translations of various styles and functions. Authentic material presented in each seminar will help them to improve their lexis in the following areas: travel and tourism, transport, political, social and culture life. Students get familiar with the basic rules of consecutive interpreting, will practise immediate reactions, estimating relevant and redundant information. By the end of the semester each student presents a file with 12 pieces of news or articles [30 lines] with new phrases, idioms and lexis.

  2. Artistic translation - comparison; W.Shakespeare (As You Like it)
  3. Tourism and Euro Lexicology: synonyms, homophones, homonyms
  4. Telecommunications, New words in English
  5. Authentic reading; phenomena of modern tourism
  6. Language of advertisements and commercials, history
  7. Practical impact, authentic listening
  8. Czech Made - Czech professional magazines and their styles
  9. Foreign companies in Czech Republic- English professional magazines, Business and Tourism
  10. English contemporary literature; Roald Dahl: Revolting Rhymes
  11. Film
  12. Evaluation of the semester and needs analysis
  13. Final consolidation
Assessment strategy and method:

active participation
80% attendance
12 texts with vocabulary and phrases
